Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari failed to travel to Ogoni-land in Rivers State Thursday, despite awesome preparations for his visit. At the eleventh hour, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo was asked to represent the president at the commencement of a cleanup of Ogoni-land devastated by oil spills.
There were speculations that the president avoided the ceremony as a result of an unfavourable security report. A militant group known as Niger Delta Avengers, which has been breaking pipelines to disrupt oil production in Nigeria, had threatened to strike in a big way such that the world would be shaken.
A fortnight ago, the president also failed to attend a ceremony in Lagos. Health issues were given as an excuse then.
