Akwa Ibom to Vote for Governor Again

The Court of Appeal sitting in Abuja Friday nullified the governorship poll conducted in Akwa Ibom State on April 11. In a unanimous decision, the 5-man panel of justices ordered a rerun within 90 days.

Earlier, the court upheld the decision of the election petitions panel on Oct. 21 ordering a rerun in 18 out of 31 LGAs in Akwa Ibom State.

The court cited over-voting and INEC’s incompetence as reasons.

Governor Udom Emmanuel of the PDP and Umana Umana of the APC did not accept the election panel’s decision.

Enriched with over 400, 000 votes from the 13 LGAs, the PDP candidate would likely win a rerun, if the court had not gone ahead to accept Umana’s plea for nullification of all.

The court wondered why only 18 LGAs would be affected when the same malpractices happened in all 31 LGAs.

Governor Udom may still appeal to the Supreme Court within 21 days, if to buy time. He would be at an advantage at the poll, after eight or nine months in office. At least he would have projects to show.
