The Court of Appeal sitting in Enugu on Monday set aside the verdict of the National Assembly Election Petitions Tribunal, Enugu, which had nullified the election of Senator Gil Nnaji of the PDP for Enugu East senatorial district. The tribunal had ordered a rerun following a petition filed by former Enugu governor Chimaraoke Nnamani of the People for Democratic Change.
The appellate court in Enugu, also on Monday, overturned the election of Uche Ekwunife of the PDP for Anambra Central senatorial district. The candidate of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Chief Victor Umeh, appealed against an earlier judgement of the elections tribunal. A rerun, within 90 days, will also involve Dr Chris Ngige of the APC. Ngige is now minister of labour and employment. If he wins, he stands a chance of becoming Senate president.
