Burial of the ‘Jewel’

NOVEMBER 25 – A member of the Awolowo family has revealed that the remains of the late Chief Mrs Hannah Idowu Dideolu Awolowo will be buried on her birthday: November 25.

The matriarch of the Awolowo family died on September 19, a day the family was meeting to plan her 100th birthday celebrations.

The deceased’s eldest daughter, Mrs Omotola Oyediran, hinted that the date was chosen to coincide with the late matriarch’s centenary.

Her husband Obafemi Awolowo was the first premier of the Western Region in the First Republic. His aspiration to rule Nigeria never materialised until his death on May 9, 1987, at age 78.

Awo had described his wife as “my jewel of inestimable value” – a phrase that may be inscribed on her tombstone at Ikenne, Ogun State.
