769 Killed in Hajj Stampede

This year’s hajj in Saudi Arabia has turned awry for almost all nations of the world. The worst stampede tragedy in at least 20 years happened on Thursday during the symbolic stoning of the devil: 717 bodies have been packed; hundreds more were wounded.

The Saudi authorities have blamed pilgrims who violated movement rules. Investigations into the incident continue, even as Muslims around the world celebrate the Eid-el-Fitr.

UPDATE: The number of those killed was officially 769 by Sept. 26.

Meanwhile, the world mourns.
