Following the death of 700 more migrants in the sea Saturday, it is now estimated that over 1, 500 people have perished this year alone on their way to Italy from Libya.
The deaths have sparked enquiries and anger in Europe and Africa.
Migration to Europe by mainly desperate Africans in recent years has been equated to the ignoble slave trade of the 16th and 17th centuries. This time, however, it is slavery by consent.
