March 16 – A day before the 5th Annual Gulf Education Conference and Exhibition opens in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, there will be the Global Education and Skills Forum in the city during which a teacher considered the world’s best will receive $1million (N168m) prize.
The Global Teacher Prize, sponsored by the Varkey Foundation, is aimed at celebrating the role of teachers in society, recognising them and improving their status. “We introduced the prize this year in order to return teachers to their rightful position as one of the most respected professions in society,” said Sunny Varkey, founder of the foundation. “The prize is not only about money; it’s also about unearthing thousands of stories of inspiration, as the many applications prove.”
Fifty teachers have been shortlisted for the prize out of 5, 000 nominees from 127 countries. The number will be further pruned to 10 before March and they all will attend the awards ceremony.
