Rights activists have described the resignation of the president of Yemen, Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, along with his entire cabinet on Thursday as a coup.

The resignation followed the takeover of the capital Sanaa by Shia Houthi rebels in spite of an agreement signed earlier between the government and the rebels, to the effect that the minority group withdraw from government and military infrastructure in exchange for greater political power.
