Nigerian Lawmakers Reject Extension of Emergency Rule

The Nigerian Senate was last Tuesday forced into a secret session following a “nay” majority vote during a consideration of President Jonathan’s request for extension of emergency rule in three states — Borno, Yobe and Adamawa.
Lobbyists asked Senate president David Mark to make a detour.
Money and or promises of “automatic” tickets may eventually sway the senators from the north to vote for extension.

Members of the House of Representatives were tear-gassed on Thursday. They climbed over the gate to the chambers and promptly rejected extension of the state of emergency in the three states.

The  three states have been under emergency rule for 18 months.
