At exactly 4.39am Wednesday, the chairman of Nigeria’s Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, declared Muhammadu Buhari of the APC winner of the 2019 presidential election held last Saturday.

Yakubu said Buhari polled 15,191,847 votes to defeat his closest rival Atiku Abubakar of the PDP who got 11,262,978 votes.

Buhari “having secured the highest number of votes cast in the election…is hereby returned elected as president,” the INEC boss said.

Thus, the president defeated Atiku by a margin of 3,928,869 votes to secure another ticket to govern Nigeria for another four years.

Buhari met the constitutional requirement of 25% of the votes cast in two-thirds of the 36 states in the country and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Yakubu said, adding that he won the polls convincingly in 19 states while Atiku triumphed in 17 states and the FCT.
