Gen. Adebayo Dead

Retired Major-General Adeyinka Adebayo, who ruled Western State as military governor from August1966 to April 1971, has died in Lagos. He was 89.

The late Adebayo was among the first set of military rulers that emerged after the coups of 1966. He was senior to Yakubu Gowon in the army but had to give way to Gowon, who was chosen by the coup plotters from the north, after the assassination of the supreme commander/head of state Gen. JTU Aguiyi-Ironsi, on July 29.

His son, Niyi, was once governor of Ekiti State.

Gen. Adebayo died in his sleep on Wednesday.
