Buhari in Germany: One Blunder Too Many

Nigeria’s president Muhammadu Buhari has done it again! As a guest of a woman  who leads Germany, Angela Merkel, on Friday he denigrated the female gender.

Buhari laughed when he was reminded of his wife Aisha’s interview with the BBC in which she claimed that her husband’s government had been hijacked by strangers and that she would not campaign for his re-election in 2019 if things continued like that.

The Nigerian leader said: “I don’t know which party my wife belongs to, but she belongs to my kitchen and my living room and the other room.”

Chancellor Merkel looked at Buhari and smiled.

The Nigerian president’s comment has been carried by almost every media platform in Germany, the BBC and Nigerian media and more.

Many Nigerian commentators have expressed disappointment with Buhari, saying he belonged to the 16th century. He disparaged the female gender while he was standing with another woman, Merkel, who has ruled a powerful nation, Germany, for 11 years.

President Buhari is fond of committing such faux pas especially when he travels abroad. His statement suggesting that a woman’s place is in the kitchen is one blunder too many.
