Alhassan Declared Nigeria’s First Female Elected Governor

Just days before she is to be sworn in as a minister, Mrs Aisha Jumai Alhassan has been declared elected governor of Taraba State. A former senator, she was the APC candidate in the April 11 election.

The Taraba State Election Petition Tribunal sitting in Abuja Saturday nullified the election of Arc Darius Ishaku of the PDP and declared that Alhassan was the duly elected governor of Taraba State.

Baring the outcome of a likely appeal by Ishaku, Alhassan will become the first woman to be elected governor in Nigeria. Mrs Virgy Etiaba was briefly governor of Anambra State in 2006 after the impeachment of her boss Peter Obi; she was not elected governor.
