Ayuba Wabba Elected NLC President

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has finally elected a new president. He is Dr Ayuba Wabba, former national chairman of the Medical and Health Workers Union of Nigeria.

Wabba polled 1,695 out of 3,115 votes cast to defeat his closest rival Joe Ajero who polled 1,400 at the polls conducted Saturday.

The election was re-scheduled after the one of February 12 was marred by hooliganism, as accusations of vote rigging and bribery led to a disruption of the election in Abuja.
Ballot boxes were broken and electoral materials were thrown on the floor of the International Conference Centre, venue of the congress. That was the situation until security agents stepped in.

Abdulwaheed Omar was then going out as NLC president. Aspirants to his position were Igwe Achese, president of NUPENG; Wabba and Joe Ajaero, general secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees.
