Nigeria’s third-largest party, Labour Party (LP), will hold a national convention in Abuja on October 4. New officers of the party will be elected at the convention. Its current executive led by Dan Nwanyanwu (national chairman) has been in office since 2004 when the party was formed.
LP has not fielded a presidential candidate so far. In 2007 and 2011, it supported the ruling PDP’s candidate. It has a governor in Ondo State, Dr Olusegun Mimiko, who recently denied that he had joined the PDP.
A highpoint of the convention will be the return of the Nigeria Labour Congress to the party. But LP is not likely to field a presidential candidate in 2015; it will support PDP’s Goodluck Jonathan.
