SYNOPSIS
On November 26, 2019, the Prof. B.I.C Ijomah Centre for Policy Studies and Research opened a conference whose theme was initially advertised as “Witchcraft: meaning, factors and practices” at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN). All hell was let loose especially on social media. Witches meet in their covens, usually after midnight, but here were ones boldly inviting people to their meeting in an academic environment! Pressure mounted on the UNN authorities to cancel the conference.
Who is a witch or a wizard?
Together with several authorities on the subject of witchcraft, we approach a “coven” in order to decode witchcraft. As the text you are going to read shows, witchcraft is not exclusively African. In this book published by Charles G. Leland in 1899, Aradia or the Gospel of the Witches,we learn the origins of belief in witchcraft in the West. This classic of neo-Paganism is one of the few books which purports to be an actual sacred text of traditional witchcraft, in particular that of the Tuscan region of Italy.
